About the work
This anecdote is one Jane Anderson has to illustrate her childhood sense of destiny, as well as the single-mindedness and self-belief that has underpinned her work ever since. 'I knew from the age of five what I wanted to do’ The one thing she could do was draw.
Jane Anderson is a figurative painter. There are two main concerns that inform the artistic choices she makes. The first is the visual aesthetic. Decisions about composition, material and skilfulrepresentation are just as crucial as the imagery itself.
The second consideration is the emotional experience of one person looking at another; how aviewer engages with the subject, and their relationship with subject matter. “I want to create an intimate relationship between the viewer and the subject, through use of pose, body language and mood”.
Much of Jane’s work strives to create something beautiful in its simplicity. She opts to remove unnecessary background information, stripping the composition so its focuses the viewer’s gaze in immediate dialogue with the subject.
Jane like’s to leave space for the imagination, to let the viewer make up their own mind what the painting is saying to them.
